Fascinated by their ideas, in the 1870s Kuindzhi created gloomy paintings «Autumn Thaw», «Forgotten Village», «Chumatsky Tract in Mariupol». Mikhail Vrubel, at the insistence of his father, tried to study at the law faculty, but could not defend his diploma and received the lowest degree - a full-time student. But the inner burning - the obsession with drawing - took its toll. He got interested in illustration, met art students and soon entered the Academy of Arts himself. Vrubel became fascinated with icon painting and restoration. He deeply imbued with the history of art, Byzantine painting and medieval stained glass. He worked together with Aivazovsky, Shishkin and Repin on illustrating the work of Lermontov. The «Demon» theme caught the gentle soul of the artist. Vrubel passionately sought to see beyond the thin worlds, to recognize and convey this essence - the image of earthly and mythical, spiritual and human simultaneously. He formed his own style of painting, a filigree mosaic with complex coloristic solutions. He received a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair for his unique tiled fireplace. And again he returned to the tragic theme for him, to «Demon», tormented by his agonizing attempt to capture the depth, to convey the incomprehensible on canvas with a brush and paint, like music - a beautiful symphony to describe the whole host of emotions, feelings and personal experience.
